Saturday Family Jazz Sessions

Junior music aficionados spend Saturday mornings singing, playing, and preparing for a lifetime of music appreciation. Strathmore’s fun, creative, kid-friendly series features renowned jazz singer Rochelle Rice and multi-instrumentalist Seth Kibel.

Recommended for ages 3–8. All sessions take place at 10:15am in the Mansion.

Performances on March 2 and April 13 are sensory-friendly to create an experience that is welcoming to children with autism or sensory sensitivities.

Odetta, Queen of Folk

Odetta Holmes’ music and commitment to civil rights influenced many artists who came after her. Kids learn the music of Odetta and explore the role that music plays in major social justice movements.

“It Don’t Mean A Thing…”

“...if it ain’t got that swing.” In this session, kids learn about swing and try their hand at it on percussion instruments and through scat singing (wordless, improvised vocals).

Improvisation: Makin’ It Up As You Go Along

Spontaneous composition allows jazz musicians to express their individuality. Kids try their hand at performing unique improvisations using percussion.

We Who Believe in Freedom: Sweet Honey in the Rock

Sweet Honey in the Rock is an a cappella singing group that has been inspiring the world with music of social justice for over 40 years. Kids learn about activism, social responsibility, and using their voices to bring about change.

Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues

Learn the origins of blues and its role in other genres, then create your own original blues ditty!

ABOUT RECOMMENDED AGES We post recommended ages for Strathmore Kids programs, but recognize and support that children respond differently depending on their age, development, and abilities. We welcome movement and noise with no shushing.

EVERYONE NEEDS A TICKET! All attendees, including accompanying adults, must have a ticket to help us manage attendance and be sure we don't go over our maximum allowed capacity. Please note that tickets for this program are not mailed; there will be a Will Call list at the door.

FREE TICKETS FOR 2 & UNDER Children 2 years old and under will be admitted to this program for free. If you plan to bring a child 2 years old or younger, please call our ticket office to reserve a special free ticket at 301.581.5100.
