Directed by William A. Wellman for John Wayne's Batjac Productions, this moving and sensitive coming-of-age tale demands rediscovery. Orphan boy Claude "Skeeter" Jackson (Brandon deWilde) lives with his Uncle Jesse (Walter Brennan) in a cabin in the swamps of Mississippi. Into their lives comes a beautiful and mysterious dog, that instead of barking makes a laughter-like cry, who they name Lady. But after a notice for a lost dog is posted — a rare Basenji, imported all the way from Africa, and recently lost by a wealthy visiting hunter — Skeeter must make the difficult decision to do the right thing, even if means giving up the dog he loves. Sidney Poitier stands out in a supporting role as Gates Watson, a neighbor of the Jacksons and an important mentor to Skeeter. DIR William A.
