Gallery exhibition of paintings that capture the comic book nature of society.

Focused on the games, comics, and advertisements which influenced her while she was growing up in Portugal, Elizabeth Casqueiro pays tribute to the joy and passion they generated as well as their telescopic reach into adulthood. Viewing the works in her solo exhibition, Ballyhoo, we come to realize that her abstracted forms are both playful and serious, rendered in the colors of childhood yet shaped by the questioning of an adult mind wondering about innocence lost and asking the question “do we ever really grow up?”

Exciting superhero comic book narratives, with their simplistic dualities of good and evil, remind the artist of the shallow politics of today. The frantic search for advertised treasures in cereal boxes is no different than the quest for greener grass, the perfect bargain, a better standing. Rousing schoolyard games of marbles and jax speak to an all too familiar winner-takes-all market economy.
