Living on the edge of Nicaragua's largest landfill, 11-year-old María leads a tough but beautiful life with her mother Lilibeth. Full of imagination, she makes the most of her days, exploring the beach and playing with her litter of puppies, soon to be sold to a ruthless gangster. But when the deal falls through, they are left penniless and in danger. Without many options, Lilibeth drops María at a recycling factory while she looks for other work. Left alone, María will have to take her future into her own hands and find a way back home. Laura Baumeister’s breathtaking debut, the first feature film ever directed by a Nicaraguan woman, is magical realism infused gem. Official Selection, 2022 Toronto and San Sebastián film festivals. DIR/SCR Laura Baumeister; PROD Rosanna Baumeister, Bruna Haddad, Martha Orozco. Nicaragua/Mexico/Netherlands/Germany/France/Norway/Spain, 2022, color, 91 min. In Spanish with English subtitles.
